Although some of these movies are probably good and I feel the Globe usually does taut reviewing in their blurbs, Dennis speaks the truth. Crunched for page space, not many foreign flicks make it in anyway. Even after you've read the review, often your only chance to see them is limited run in a limited amount of theaters, and the reason they are being shown in the first place is the fact that they got such good reviews.Read the listings in the Sunday Globe. If a movie has four stars attached to it (that’s the highest rating) then it is without question a film done in some foreign language with English subtitles. Every time.
Right on Dennis, that's Whats Bugging Me me too. In fact, if a movie is readily available to watch or I am curious about it, I will forgo reading criticism altogether.
A great way to appreciate or find out about a film is hearing directors, cinematographers or the like talking about their own projects is the most revealing. Sometimes DVDs come with commentaries or special features that offer this. Candid interviews are often a good way of gauging how a director feels about a film. More often than not, late night talk shows feature quick in-and-out interviews, meant for promotion and not reflection.
