Ward's Picks

This is Ward Clark of Townsend. He picks movies. Behind him are his picks at the Townsend Public Library, where he spoke at last Friday's Legislative Breakfast.

In checking his reading history of the C/W MARS catalog since 2004, Ward said he has taken out 3,125 items. Twenty of those were books.

"I had been around here, taking out a lot of movies and began doing Ward Clark's movie recommendations, it's been two years now, I didn't realize what I had signed up for," he said.

A typical group has Ward choosing movies the Townsend Library has on their shelves, rating them eight, nine or ten and prominently displaying them. Using interlibrary loan, however, he can access any DVD in any library in MA. The video store is extinct, the library evolving— the next refuge for affordable viewing for all us movie buffs.

Behind him in the photo are some selections, a few of which I had seen, a few I hadn't. We chatted about:
  • Marie Antoinette — Sophia Coppola's stunning period-piece, which utilized Oscar-winning costumes and beautiful set pieces with a soundtrack of 80s punk...leading to a disaster at Cannes and hate-it-or-love-it reviews all over.
  • Blade Runner — It's Blade Runner. Enough said? TPL has the Blu-ray version available at the library.
  • The Triplets of Bellville — A surreal, playful French animated film about a kidnapping.
  • Gran Torino — Clint Eastwood? One of the greatest actors of our time being directed by one of the greatest directors of our time. (He and himself.)
And the best part about all this, Ward listens. He's just as excited about movies as you, if not more and he wants his experience to be shared with everyone. His talk, the last of the event, ended with a quote Keith Richards:
"When you are growing up there are two institutional places that affect you most powerfully: the church which belongs to God, and the public Library, which belongs to you. The public library is the great equalizer."

"Townsend Public Library is my second church, and I like to tell people how important it is," he said.
