The Third Man, 1949

Post-war Vienna is a great place to set a movie...especially a dramatic noir mystery. After 1945 Vienna was restored as the capital of Austria, but like Berlin was divided into four zones. Unlike Berlin, Vienna . Joeseph Cotten is tangled up in a quad-lingual mystery involving his friend, played by Orson Welles. Apart from the distortion of camera, the lighting in the movie gives it an air of anti-heroic drama (see the sewer scenes). This movie does the best job of capturing the way of life in Vienna, with its black market commodities and mulit-national paramilitary police patrols.
